Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the GxTracker™ compatible with my heat pump system?

A.  The GxTracker™ is designed to be compatible with all ground source heat pumps.   If the heat pump has variable flow, then a Flow Kit is required.  If the heat pump is variable stage then a Power Kit is recommended, but not required.

Q: Can I use my own Watt Node?

A. The GxTracker™ uses the custom Option “P3” and the power computations are based on the number of watt-hours per pulse. If you are using a different Watt Node that produces pulse outputs, contact us and we can look into about adding the device to our list of supported devices.

Q:  Are the on-pipe temperatures accurate?

A. The accuracy of the the heat flow computations relies on accurate temperature measurements so it is important the there is a good thermal connection between the on-pipe temperature sensor and the pipe. There should be at least 3/4″ exposed metal along the entering and leaving water lines to allow the sensor to sit flush. The thermal pads provided with the sensors help to insure good connection and can be doubled up to help fill gaps, if present.  Our testing has found that the GxTracker on-pipe temperature sensors compare very well with in-pipe (P/T port) temperature measurements.

Q:  Can I install the GxTracker myself?

A. We recommend that you have a GSHP professional install your GxTracker for you. If you want to install the GxTracker yourself, the most challenging part of the installation is to install the current switch onto the electrical wire feeding the compressor. This will likely involve opening the service panel for the heat pump which exposes dangerous voltages. Be sure to take necessary precautions including turning off the power at the breaker box . We recommend that a trained electrician install the current switch.

Q:  What do I do if my Auxiliary Heat is coming on regularly?

A.  Make sure you are operating your system according to your installer’s guidelines.   During brief periods of extremely cold weather, the auxiliary heat may be necessary to keep your home comfortable.  However, if your auxiliary heat is coming on during milder weather, you may be trying to bring the house temperature up too quickly.  Instead, try allowing more time for your home to heat up (ramp the temperatures up more gradually).  If the auxiliary heat is consistently supplying a large percentage of your home’s heat, contact your installer.

Q:  What if I don’t have an always-on internet connection?

A.  At this time, the GxTracker Gateway requires an always-on internet connection to transmit data to the server for processing and display.    If broadband is not available in your area, you may want to consider an satellite service provider.   We have found that this comparison to provide a good summary of options that may be available to you.
